Tansi, a group of local volunteers, through Fisher River Cree Nation’s Reconciliation process, is planning a Commemoration Park to honor various groups…one group being Fisher River Cree Nation band members who attended Residential Schools.  As a start, we are collecting names of residential school survivors with the help of families and friends.  Research will also take place at the Truth and Reconciliation Information Centre as part of this process.  Reconciling this aspect of our history is so important in our healing and honoring our people.  We are asking for your help.

Please provide us with any information that you may be aware of, including names of family members, schools, dates and years attended.  Any information you may be able to provide is most appreciated.

Here is the list of Residential Schools in Manitoba.  We do realize that some of our FRCN band members may have also attended residential schools in other provinces, therefore we are in the process of adding to this list for information and references purposes.

Indian Residential Schools in Manitoba

  • Assiniboia Residential School – 1958 to 1973 (15 years). Managed by the Roman Catholic Church and Federal Government.
  • Birtle Residential School – 1888 to 1970 (82 years). 1883 to 1888 an Indian Day School was operated.  Managed by the Presbyterian Church and Federal Government.  After 1925, the United Church took over.
  • Brandon Residential School – 1895 to 1972 (77 years). Managed by the Methodist Church and Federal Government until 1926…the United Church took over in 1926. Brandon was an Industrial School before a residential school.  A new school was built in 1929.
  • Churchill Residential School – 1964 to 1973 (9 years). A ‘vocational’ school for students 15 years of age and older, although there were some younger children.  Managed by the Roman Catholic, Anglican Churches and Federal Government.
  • Cross Lake Residential School – 1912 to 1969 (54 years). Managed by the Roman Catholic Church and Federal Government.
  • Elkhorn Industrial School – 1889 to 1969 (60 years). Managed by the Anglican and Church of England with the Federal Government.
  • Fort Alexander Residential School – 1904 to 1970 (66 years). Managed by the Roman Catholic Church and Federal Government.
  • Guy Hill Residential School – 1926 to 1979 (53 years). Managed by the Roman Catholic Church and Federal Government.
  • McKay Residential School – 1914 to 1988 (50 years). Was in The Pas and later moved to Dauphin MB.  Managed by the Anglican and the Federal Government.
  • Norway House Residential School – 1899 to 1967 (60 years). Managed by the Methodist Church and Federal Government until 1926…the United Church took over in 1925.  Newly built school after fire in 1954.
  • Notre Dame Hostel – 1960 to 1967 (7 years). Located in Jack River (Norway House). Connected to Cross Lake Residential School from 1930 to 1960.  Managed by the Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church.
  • Pine Creek Residential School (Camperville MB) – 1890 to 1969 (77 years). Managed by the Roman Catholic Church and Federal Government.
  • Portage La Prairie Residential School – 1891 to 1975 (84 years). Managed by the Presbyterian Church and Federal Government.  After 1925, the United Church took over.
  • Sandy Bay Residential School – 1905 to 1970 (65 years).  Managed by the Roman Catholic Church and Federal Government
